At Queen Anne Upholstery & Refinishing, our goal is to help each and every client achieve the space of their dreams. The first step in this process involves helping them understand their different interior decor style options.
One of our favorites is the warm and welcoming rustic decor. This natural style is versatile and combines well with a number of other types of decor, but a handful of elements are necessary for a space to be truly “rustic.”
Warm and Neutral Color Scheme
Unsurprisingly, rustic decor is made up of mostly neutral colors. Think browns, tans, beiges, grays, and muted blacks, with a focus on warm shades so that the space doesn’t feel stark or cold. To incorporate pops of bold color, stick with earthy tones such as green, brick red, or adobe orange.
Most of your pieces should be solid-colored, but you can add patterns with area rugs, throws, or pillows.
Rustic decor is a little rough around the edges — literally. It tends to favor furniture that’s not overly polished, such as wood furniture with rough edges (edges that haven’t been rounded or sanded), to create a natural and organic feeling. Handmade furniture is also common.
Exposed Outdoor Elements
Bringing the outdoors into your home is one of the best ways to achieve a rustic look, which is why you’ll see many exposed brick walls and fireplace surrounds. Rough natural stone is another great option.
Leather furniture is essential to rustic homes, and we have a very particular kind of leather in mind: Go for soft, broken-in leather furniture with simple lines. Then add textured throws, pillows, and rugs for contrast.
The great thing about leather is that the more you use it, the more comfortable (and rustic!) it will get.
If you’re on the lookout for a new home or renovating your current home is an option, a few key architectural elements will go a long way toward creating a rustic space. Exposed wood beams, stone or brick accent walls, and oversized fireplaces help create a cabin-like feel. Large windows are also a must, bringing the beauty of your natural surroundings into your home.
