Choosing the Right Upholstery Fabric
When it’s time to choose upholstery fabric, there are several important factors to consider – chief among them is durability. Ask yourself: Will this piece be used daily or is it more decorative? The answer will help guide which fabric types are suitable.
Fabric durability is typically measured by its “double rub count,” a rating determined by the Wyzenbeek abrasion test. The higher the count, the more wear the fabric can withstand. No need to test it yourself, this information is readily available from reputable fabric suppliers. For homes with kids, pets, or high-traffic areas, we recommend fabrics that are stain-resistant or easy to clean.
But upholstery isn’t just about function; it’s also about style. The right fabric can transform a piece into a statement or help it blend seamlessly with your space. Consider how colors, textures, and patterns will play with your existing décor. A bold, bright fabric might serve as a stunning accent, while a neutral tone can offer timeless versatility.
Sustainability is another factor for many homeowners. If eco-conscious choices are a priority, look for fabrics that are biodegradable, recyclable, or made with responsible manufacturing practices.

All About Customer’s Own Material (C.O.M.)
Orders using Customer’s Own Material (C.O.M.) will be scheduled for production only after the fabric has been received at our factory.
If no specific application instructions are provided with the order, Queen Anne Upholstery will use its best judgment when upholstering with the supplied material.
When sending your fabric, please clearly label the outside of the package with the following information:
- Your name (or the buyer’s name)
- Purchase order number
- Style name and fabric color
This ensures accurate tracking and efficient processing of your order once the fabric arrives at our facility.
Please note that Queen Anne Upholstery is not responsible for any defects, flaws, or color variations in C.O.M. fabrics. We strongly recommend that all materials be carefully inspected by the customer prior to shipment. Additionally, Queen Anne Upholstery does not assume responsibility for the flame retardancy of C.O.M. fabrics. It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure all materials meet applicable safety regulations and fire codes.
Understanding Fabric Yardage Estimates
To help you estimate your project needs, we’ve created a handy reference guide. Visit our Upholstery Yardage Charts blog post to get a better idea of how much fabric your piece may require.
All estimated yardage requirements are based on using a defect-free, solid-color fabric that is 54″ wide. Several factors can significantly impact the actual yardage needed, including:
- Pattern repeat size
- Type of print
- Overall pattern layout
Please note: if your chosen fabric has an irregular or large-scale pattern, additional yardage may be needed to account for layout and matching.
