The Ultimate Guide to Upholstery Care & Maintenance
At Queen Anne Upholstery, we take pride in high-quality furniture restoration for both residential and commercial spaces. Proper care and maintenance will keep your furniture looking its best for years to come. Follow this guide to ensure durability and lasting beauty.
Caring for Your New Upholstery
- Use a soft, dry upholstery brush to loosen and remove surface dirt before vacuuming.
- Always use the brush attachment on your vacuum to prevent damage to the fabric.
- For high-pile fabrics (such as velvet), brush in the direction of the pile to maintain a uniform appearance and restore loft.
Vacuum & Brush Frequently
- Fluff and smooth cushion inserts regularly to restore their shape and natural loft.
- Flip and rotate cushions periodically to ensure even wear and extend their lifespan.
- Do not remove cushion casings for laundering, as this may damage the fabric and make it difficult to refit the covers.
Cushion Care
- Protect from heat, sunlight, and liquids. Avoid placing upholstery in direct sunlight to prevent fading and deterioration.
- If spills occur, blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth—never rub, as this can push the stain deeper into the fabric.*
Fabric Care & Cleaning Guide*
Quick Response to Spills
- Blot any liquid spills immediately with a dry, absorbent cloth.
- For light stains, use a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap and lukewarm water.
- Rinse the area thoroughly and allow it to air dry.
Tough Stains
- For stubborn stains, professional cleaning is recommended.
- Ensure the cleaning service uses solvent-based cleaners that do not contain Trichloroethylene.
- Dry with low heat only to prevent fabric damage.
Mildew & Deep Cleaning
Most fabrics are mildew-resistant, but mildew can form on dirt and residue. To clean mildew or tough stains, use a solution of one part bleach to two parts water (only on bleach-safe fabrics). Rinse thoroughly and let air dry.
Do not use bleach on printed or natural fabrics like hemp, as it may cause fading or damage.

Spot Cleaning & Stain Removal*
Velvet Upholstery
- Vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment to maintain its plush texture.
- To remove pressure marks or wrinkles, use steam or a low-heat iron on the reverse side.
Performance Vegan Leather
- Wipe up spills immediately using soap and water.
- Disinfect with a 1:5 bleach-to-water solution or mild disinfectant.
- For wrinkles, use low heat or steam on the back side.*
By following these care guidelines, you can ensure your reupholstery project remains elegant and durable in both residential and commercial spaces.
*NOTE: Always test first on any fabric in an inconspicuous area prior to any self-cleaning. When in doubt, always seek the help of a professional cleaning company.
